What kind of paint should I use for canvas painting?

I'm interested in this form of art but have no idea where to start. Are there any other solvents or supplies I would need? I'm probably just going to get canvas that is already mounted so nothing involving that process, please. Thank you.

I bumped into this question about 30 years ago. Should I use oil paint or acrylic paint? I wound up trying both. Oil paint takes much longer to dry so 'rework' (blending color rather than painting over a color) is much easier. On the other hand acrylic dries much quicker so you need to blend faster or let it dry and paint over an area.
For solvents, be careful. Oil paint needs a petroleum based thinner (to clean brushes etc.) I bought a gallon can and poured a little into a small jar for immediate use. (Keep a lid on it when not in use.) Acrylic is a water based paint so water is fine for thinning and brush cleaning.
