Why didn't my cake layer properly?

I found this really cute recipe for making cakes in mason jars. I made some for a family friend's birthday and the bottom layer was supposed to be red and the top layer was supposed to be white. However, when I poured in the white batter, it just blended into the red and now the cakes are red with white swirls.

Can anyone tell me why this happened and how to avoid it the next time I try to make these mason jar cakes?

Gravity is driving the stream of the second batter when it is poured so it went straight toward the bottom and the turbulence caused the swirling.

Pour in the first batter then pour the second batter into something like a gravy ladle that is right at the surface of the batter. The gravy ladle will prevent the agressive mixing.
