How do identify what species is my bonsai tree?

It's not your typical 'tree'. It has a moderately large and fat trunk, but has no branches, just long, narrow leaves, sort of like a palm. When I first got it several months ago, the leaf/fronds were maybe 12" long, and now many of them are 18 - 24" long. It loves the indirect bright light near a southern facing window. I need to know how to care for it other than simply watering it once a week.

What do you know about palm trees?

What can you all tell me about the indoor cultivation of palm trees, specifically which species would be most likely to thrive indoors, will not grow beyond twenty feet (6 meters), and will not pollute my air with the scent of rotting fruit?
Ideally, I would like to make a palm bonsai, but simply a potted palm would be satisfactory.

I've had a Pheonix Canariensis aka Canary island date palm in the house for several years now.

The chances of it growing too big indoors are remote to say the least. I would say it survives rather than thrives indoors although I do put it outside in the summer. Experience has taught me not to overfeed it with fertiliser. It works too well! The fronds grow upwards very quickly but don't develop enough thickness or strength to support their own weight and then just flop over.

It makes no smell at all and never has. While indoors it is prone to infestation by scale insect.
