Is the chinese crested dog a good breed?

I seen this dog and thought it was cute. I was wondering if it was a good dog to have inside, how it acted or just about anything you can tell me about it. Thanks for your answers.

They are affectionate little dogs. Mine is fairly calm, most I have met are pretty calm dogs.. but I have seen a few that are active. They tend to be very affectionate with family and friends.. most I have met are not outgoing-friendly towards strangers, but not aggressive either.

Most get along well with other dogs and cats. I know many people who have cresteds and kids.. as long as they are socialized together, they are fine. Mine will play with my 2-year old child.

they are notoriously difficult to housebreak tho.. keep this in mind. Many are given up in shelter and rescue for housebreaking reasons.

They are clingly and needy, expecially as puppies... they can be demanding. They also like to push your buttons to get what they want (we call them master manipulators for a reason!). They dont really like to be left alone for long. Mine will howl as I leave the house, and then go pout on his recliner until I return.

The hairless do need special skin care.. they are prone to acne, blackheads, sunburn, dry skin and other irritations. The hairless is also prone to dental issues. Very common for a hairless mouth to be missing teeth. Many are given up in shelter and rescue because of the skin care. People assume the dog is hypoallergenic and requires no maintenence.

The puffs are actually easier to maintain.. even if you choose to keep them shaved down in a hairless cut. When shaved down, you do still have to be careful of sunburn, but they dont have the skin issues. Puffs also have proper dentation. Puffs are NOT *rare* by any means. Dont let anyone try to tell you that! I was recently at a petshop that sold puppies and overheard the employee tell a customer that only 1% of them come with hair. I corrected her and told her that its actually more like 50%. They are equally acceptable in the breed as the hairless is. Puffs are not quite as demanding as hairless, but still affectionate. Many people in the breed actually prefer the temperment of the puffs.

If you do choose to get this breed, if you decide to go with a breeder.. do research and find a reputable breeder. The breed is prone to several health issues. PRA and dry eye are the most common issues, Ive also heard of cresteds with luxating lens. CERF testing is vital. Some lines are prone to closed ear canals... BAER tests rule this out. Luxating patella and legges perthe are another issue.. OFA tests are important. I've been told that some lines have heart murmurs, but I dont hear of this issue much. Some rescue folk have been having issues with dogs getting liver and kidney issues tho, so these problems are cropping up among puppy mill and byb lines. Health issues are another reason dogs are given up. Dry eye expecially is difficult and expensive to treat.

If you do want to go with rescue, I reccommend Crest-care. Not all rescue are unhealthy... but do be aware if you choose to buy from a breeder. If you're investing a lot of money into buying a puppy, you will want to find a breeder that is doing all the proper health tests!

I highly doubt you will find one. They are still an uncommon breed, and are not ussually found in video or computer games. I have been trying for several years to get AOL to make an avatar with a crested in it!
