If something is offered for free, can i just go & take it? Or do I have to speak to offerer first?

EXAMPLE:
Fred places an ad saying that he wants someone to take away his home so that he can build a new house on it. The next day, while Fred is at work, Tom arrives at the door in his semi-trailer with three of his mates on hand to help him load it up and take it away. Fred arrives home and finds his house gone. A neighbour, who saw what had happened, gives Fred Tom’s number plate. When the police track down Tom, he cites the Carbolic Smokeball case and claims that the house is now his. He suggests to the police that they have no right now to be on his property and that they should leave. Is Tom correct in his claim that the house is his? His claim is that he had a binding contract, just like Mrs Carlill in the Carbolic Smokeball case?

I've heard of a similar situation. Disclaimer here: I'm not giving you legal advice, but my inclination is that this was a rather open ended contract. The "offerer" set out the terms for what he had to offer, and if he did in fact phrase the ad in such a way that anyone is welcome to his house (barring some complication in him being unable to consent, revoking consent, or it not being his in the first place), then the only other intuitive prerequisite to a contract would be for another person (Tom in this case), to fulfill the role of purchaser (cost being nothing) and fulfill his role of removing the home.
