Family Last Name
Family Last Name

Is all the people who have the same last name family?
Whether your in America or Europe or anywhere in the world. If all the people who have the same surname are they all family of some kind? like im from south africa my last name is Uys.. there are some celebriteies that have the last name of Uys.. are we all family of some kind or how does that work if you trace it backwards?
People with the same surname are not necessarily related for 2 major reasons:
1. Surnames were never unique words.
Most surname, particularly in the European tradition, originated from places or geographic features (i.e. Hill), personal descriptions or attributes (i.e. Brown), occupations (i.e. Smith), or lineage of first names (i.e. Johnson was a son of John). It's very common that 2 totally unrelated people would have been the "first" in a lineage to use the same surname. This is even more true in places with colonial (or slave) heritage, as people with no prior surname would have often taken surnames from the colonial power's culture, even though they were not related to anyone within that culture. Also, the same surname can originate in 2 totally different places and among unrelated peoples (Lee is the common example.)
2. People change surnames.
Usually when a surname is changed, for whatever reason, it's not to something totally new and made up. It's often to an already existing name that sounds similar or has the same meaning in a different language (i.e. Braun to Brown). Common reasons a person might change their surname include migration, adoption, phonetics, to gain power or reduce persecution, or to hide. A good example: after WW2 nearly all people with the last name Hitler changed their name. It's doubtful they changed it to something never before heard, that would not be very helpful in trying to hide your past name, since it would raise questions. They probably also did not change it to something that could be easily connected to them. So now Joe Hitler is Joe Smith, no relation to any other Smith in the world.
The only way to know if you are related to anyone else, regardless of their name, is to do the research that connects one ancestor to another.
Any ideas for hippie/nature last names to help us choose a new family name when our baby is born?
We are wanting to change our last names, since we are getting married soon, and having a baby in October, we are wanting to start a new family name. We want something unique and on the hippie/nature side. Any ideas?
Since choosing a name is a very personal and emotional experience, which will effect someone's entire life, I don't really think Yahoo! Answers is the best place to start asking since you're going to get a lot of off-color responses. Nonetheless, here's a few ideas:
Meadow
Prairie
Willow
Soulchild
Starchild
Any astrological symbol
White Rabbit (there's a joke in this one)
Herbert (there's a joke in this one, too)
Freshair
Earth
Soil
Water
Fire
Oxygen
If your goal is to be creative, then be creative (I guess).

The Last of the Name $12.17 This memoir snaked through several hands (and voices) before landing in playwright Brian Friel's lap. It is the reminiscence of an 80-year-old Irish man, transcribed first in the 1940's by a schoolteacher who found him filled with memorable stories--both of his own and of his ancestors, who had passed the stories down through generations. The book tells of a preindustrial Ireland, of local priests, and of McGlinchey himself, the last of his family line. |

Last Chance $10.99 "Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ, ' and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Joshua is a Christian man living in a near-future high-tech society. He is happy with his life, his work, and his relationships; but one morning he has a revelation that changes his life forever. Joe Simons's Last Chance is an action-packed account of the end times. For centuries, Christians have been waiting for the Lord's return. What will happen when that time actually arrives? With time running out, will Joshua risk his own future to save the world from eternal separation from God? This could be everyone's Last Chance." |

The Name $14.99 "Before offering a prayer at the inauguration of President George W. Bush, Franklin Graham was asked by a fellow participant if he intended to pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Graham assured him that he would and encouraged this pastor to do the same. As Graham reminded him, "That's the only thing we've got." In days of religious confusion and cultural relativism, Franklin Graham reminds us that there are absolutes in the kingdom of God. "The Name" explains the significance of names in the Hebrew culture, centering on the meaningfulness of the name "Jesus." Chapters focus on the different aspects of power in the Lord's name, such as "Healing in the Name" and "Salvation in the Name."" |

Last Run of the Whisperer: A Story of a Soldier of the Connecticut Line $39.95 ""Last Run of the Whisperer" is a historical fiction novel based upon the Revolutionary War records of William Waterman of Norwich, Connecticut colony. The author has taken the information that William Waterman has provided to us through his own account of his service in the American Revolution, when he petitioned the United States Congress in 1832, for a pension for said service. >The author has taken the information provided by William Waterman and completed extensive research on the battles and areas of service that our hero served in, embellishing and expounded upon this information, to develop an exciting and accurate historical story surrounding our hero, William Waterman. >William Waterman himself, in his petition to the United States Congress identifies one severe wound received in said service, at the battle of White Plain, in the colony of New York, above New York City. This wound by itself could have cost our hero his life. That he survived this wound and the numerous other battles and action that he undoubtedly saw was extraordinary. >Although William Waterman lists a number of battles and theatres of war he saw service in, he does not describe the details of these battles. The author takes his literary liberty, upon researching these battles and events to interject our hero into the battles. That William Waterman is involved in each and everyone of these battles or theatres of war in based upon William Waterman's own account. >Upon his completion of service in the Continental army, William Waterman listed his next service as a privateer, that is as a licensed pirate. The author has taken the liberty to believe that William Waterman engaged as a privateer in the cause of the upstart Americans and prayed upon British shipping, as he makes no mention of serving the British in his petition to the United States Congress, and infact lists his service as a privateer in his petition for his pension, indicating that all of his papers and records of his service in the Continental army were lost when the ship he was engaged on as a privateer was sunk, leading to his subsequent imprisonment by the British on the prison ship "Jersey." Our hero, William Waterman also does not identify the name of the ship on which he was engaged as a privateer. Again the author takes his literary liberty to name the privateer ship, and thus we have the "Last Run of the Whisperer." >During the course of our adventure, William Waterman looses his boyhood friend to the cause of the American Revolution, learns that his father is fighting against him on the side of the British, looses his first love to another man while he is imprisoned, and eventually finds the girl he is to marry while hiding from the British. William Waterman finds peace and contentment spending his life after the war living in the Green Mountains of Vermont." |
