Can old gear oil can be used for bike polishing?

One of my friends recently advised me that old gear oil frm motor bike can be used for polishing the bike.I have tested it on the chrome bits and it sure gives a shine.But i am a bit skeptical that it will ruin the glossy paint finish.
My friend told that it will keep the sun's rays away and the paint will remain glossy for a longer time.

Is it true.

There are often bits of debris, including metal shavings in the oul that could damage your finish.
