Fruit Pears Peach

Is container grown fruit is a viable option when space is limited?

Take a look in almost any plant supply catalogue, whether online or in print, and you will undoubtedly find many types of fruit that are suitable for growing in containers, with some varieties especially propagated for that purpose.

No longer do you need space for an orchard to grow apples or pears, or masses of available ground in order to grow blackcurrants or raspberries. In fact almost any type of fruit has a variety or two aimed at container growth.

Top fruit:

Top fruit is fruit that is normally harvested from a full size tree such as apple, pear, peach, cherry, damson, plum, orange and lemon.

However there are now many dwarf or cordon (sometimes called minarette) varieties of these trees available to everybody. Shop around through the internet, mail order plant catalogues and the local garden centre or plant nursery and you are likely to find quite a good choice at many different prices.

All are scaled-down versions of their much bigger counterparts and will grow comfortably in a large container with the correct care. They will also often produce lots of fruit by comparison to their small compact size.  What's more they are frequently less expensive than their full sized relatives.

Soft fruit:

Soft fruit is fruit that is produced through a normal plant or on canes or small shrubs. Well known soft fruits include blackberries, strawberries, gooseberries, blackcurrants, raspberries, redcurrants, blueberries etc. You see the recurring influence here, all are either ‘berries' or ‘currants' of some type.

Most with few exceptions (such as strawberry, gooseberry) are available from your supplier as living ‘canes' which can be planted into your container ready for more growth. These will also produce a profusion of fruit with the right care.

Other fruit:

By other fruit I am referring of course to fruit that is used as a vegetable such as tomato, pepper, cucumber, courgette etc. The fact is that although these are often called vegetables they are actually fruit by definition - fruit is produced from the point where the flower dies and a swollen growth then replaces the flower, whereas a vegetable is another part of the plant eaten as a food item (such as stem - celery, leaf - lettuce, root - carrot, flower - broccoli, seed - beans).

An old saying states that, ‘Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit and not a vegetable; Wisdom is knowing not to use it in a fruit salad!'

Container grown fruit plants need to be pruned hard at the right time of year, spring. The fruit will be produced on this years new growth in most cases so you will need to promote new growth by pruning. I don't have the space here to explain how to prune correctly so check online or in some other media for details, plus correct pruning is more of a visual tutorial to get it right rather than a text explanation.

Containers will also dry out much quicker in warm weather so regular watering is a must, a mulch will also help for this reason; they will also need to be well drained. Fruit plants will need plenty of nutrients to be at their best so a suitable fertiliser or manure will need to be incorporated into the container soil or compost and topped up occasionally.

Use the largest container you can to allow for good root development and try not to move it around or disturb it too much. The fruit plant container is likely to be rather heavy because of this so moving it might prove to be a challenge anyway.

An often unconsidered bonus is that difficult-to-please children are more likely to eat fresh foods as part of their five-a-day if they have had a hand in growing it.

So to summarise you can grow many varieties of delicious fruit at home in containers provided you do things correctly. So get advise from the supplier and read and follow the care instructions carefully.
