way to clean wall above fireplace?

i have this huge beautiful white wall above me fireplace but i think some one left the shaft closed for the smoke to go out and then it couldn't escape and then it went up the wall and now some of it's black. i've tried paper towel and paper towl with water but then it just turns into a beige color.

Clean it really well with a product that cleans painted surfaces in preparation for being painted (check your local hardware store for products available in your area), then repaint. You will never get all the soot off that wall by cleaning. If it's really sooty you may even need a couple of coats.

Also, I'd be really careful with this fireplace, the chimney could be blocked or otherwise malfunctioning.
