What's the longest lasting fireplace grate.?

Looks like they sell cast iron and steel grates. I'm tired of buying new ones every year, we have a large fireplace that we use daily.

I like the cast iron ones better than the steel, but I'm lucky to get one heating season out of it. The steel ones last longer but don't hold the fire as well. The cast iron one has smaller openings so nothing but the ash falls through. The steel one lets the logs fall through and lay in the ashes and they don't burn all the way through. I'm thinking of taking the steel one and welding a lot more bars in it. I made a grate for my outdoor coleman firepit out of half inch rebar. The original one eventually got soft and collapsed from the heat. The new one has been in use for four years and shows no sign of failing yet. But it doesn't look as good as a cast iron basket for the fireplace.
