How Candle Making Fragrance Will Set The Mood

As anyone who wears perfume or cologne knows, the right scent will do wonders...not only for your own mood but in the way that it affects those whom with you come into contact.  And conversely, a bad scent...either "too this" or "too that", will have negative effects.  Everyone has had at least one airplane ride sitting next to someone with "too much of this" or "that" on, filling up their breathing space.  Well, the same holds true when using candle making fragrance and essential oils.

The science of scent involves the study of the neurological and emotional effects that a particular smell has on a person.  Humans have a highly developed sense of smell, so it stands to reason that it is wise to do a little research into the effects the various fragrances have been known to have on people.  When making candles at home, a little reading up on aromatherapy is always a good thing.  You will find which scents will uplift the mood, or bring calmness and serenity.  What follows is a brief description of the more popularly used essential oils in the creating of homemade aromatherapy candles.

One of the popular scents for candle making is Eucalyptus.  This plant has long been used to help certain respiratory ailments as well as opening up nasal passages and easing congestion.  The scent of Eucalyptus also serves to lift one's mood.  Peppermint and Geranium are also great essential oils for lifting one's spirits.  These are best when burned in the morning, as if you burn them at night before bedtime, you may have a bit of trouble falling to sleep.  For an energizing scent in your candles, you may always want to consider either Lemon or Tea Tree Oil.  And remember, you may choose to combine the scents to create your own customized fragrance.

Now candles themselves seem to create a relaxing and warm atmosphere.  And just as there are many essential oils and fragrances that stimulate the senses, there are many that enhance the calming effects that candles have.  Once such scent is the ever popular Ylang Ylang.  This is a flower that blooms on the Canaga tree, a tree that is indigenous to rain forests.  Ylang Ylang has a light floral scent that has been used for ages in the treatment of depression and anxiety.  When choosing this particular candle making fragrance, be sure not to use too much, as nausea or headaches may result.  Lavender is a widely used scent, in everything from dish washing liquid to fabric softener dryer sheets.  Though the effect is both uplifting and relaxing at the same time, this is a great scent to add to candles to be burned just before bedtime.  Two more scents to consider when making candles to promote relaxation are Chamomile and Sage.  Many know that sipping on Chamomile tea before bedtime often reduces the effects of insomnia.  Well, burning candles scented with Chamomile or Sage does the same thing.

Now, as far as the particular kind of candle making wax which binds the best with fragrances...candle makers have varying opinions.  The two most popular choices are either paraffin or soy wax, or a combination of the two.  The key here is adding the fragrance to the wax when it is at the highest temperature during the melting process, that being 180 degrees Fahrenheit.  In doing so, you will have candles that hold their scent for longer periods of time, and put out the maximum amount of scent when burned.  All of the above mentioned scents can be combined to created truly unique candles, those which reflect your own personal tastes and preferences.  Homemade homeopathy, and they look really pretty too!

I have a ton of fresh herbs like Lavender and Lemon Balm in my garden along with a lot of great smelling flowers. How does one capture their fragrance for use in cologne or home made perfumes or oils?

Calendula (Pot Marigolds) have skin healing properties, so I use to put them in olive oil. Then rub on - worked great. Of course you can rub the flowers directly on your skin, but how to preserve that and use through the winter was the use for the olive oil.
