In the days of ancient Egypt, charms were used for identification and also as symbols of faith and luck. During the days of the Roman Empire, Christians would use tiny fish charms hidden in their clothing to identify themselves to other Christians.

Charms were worn during the Dark Ages to represent political and religious affiliations and family origin, even. Even Medieval knights wore charms for protection in battle.

Queen Victoria in 19th century England donned charm bracelets which actually began a fashion trend among the European noble classes.

Characteristic components used in Charms are plants, metals, fabric, coins, stones, fruit, candle wax and really anything else of any symbolic value.

A charm varies from an amulet, talisman or pendant in that it may be quickly spoken or a quick gesture.

Wearing and Using Charms:

"Using" charms may be as simple as merely carrying around a coin, piece of metal or feather. And it may be as sophisticated as hanging a Dream Catcher. It is said that there are certain requirements or taboos when making items like these, such as abstaining from sexual activity or food; this is done for the sake of purifying one's spirit or to help get one into the proper frame of mind for practicing charm magic.

Cliche: A relic given to character by a loved family member who's deceased?

I'm rewriting my novel (of which I started at age 11, so I'm getting the cliche bits thrown out gradually).

One character has said relic which breaks in half to rip a vortex for instant travel. When I describe it, the relic comes across as metal and decorative. 8 inch long stick which reminds me of mini sword *casing* Too much? Just say the word, "cliche" at will.

This is a fantasy & there are a few relics mentioned which have different powers. IE: Like a dream catcher when held in front of a person can glow colors to tell you whether that person is good or bad.

It's really only a cliché if the relic is the key to the entire plot. This particular artefact reminds me of The Subtle Knife (book 2 of His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman), where the knife of the title could open gateways between parallel universes.
