Modern Art Abstract

At what point is art so abstract or minimal that it's no longer art?

This question was asked by my history teacher about modern art. I was just wondering everyone's opinion about it because there are paintings on display that are splatters of different colour or just a plain black square and they sell for thousands (or millions maybe) and I get the feeling that some people see that and just think "hey, my seven year old son/daughter could've done that...". (And also, I'm not excluding film, 3D works, or other mediums from modern art, but I couldn't think of any specific examples of those.)

My school actually has a mandatory two semester long course titled "Art and Design in Contemporary Society" that it's main focus is to address this. Abstract art has to take alot of things into consideration, balance, color, rhythm, value, and emotion. Colors can represent alot of things as well that can make a big difference in a piece. it may look very easy (even I think alot of is dumb) but so much work has been put into some of those pieces. Some painters will paint a painting, sand it away, and paint another painting multiple times to leave the impression of the last painting and create a personal history for a single piece. There are pieces by a particular artist (I don't remember who it is, but he's famous for them) who painted a large black canvas and a large white canvas and it's considered to be amazing! ridiculous, no? What the common pubic fails to see is it you look close there is an intricate design in both, only in a slightly different shade, so slight, the common observer can't tell. That take alot of work. Weather or not it was worth the work is questionable, but I think we have alot of useless invention today that we could do without, and art is kinda the same way. It's all in how they spend their time.

If your really interested look up the Fluxus Movement lead by artist like Marcel Duchamp (sp?) who put a urinal and a Pedestal and called it art just to see how many people would really call something so stupid art. (Mind you, Duchamp is a real artist, he just liked to stir up trouble)

Who created Modern Art ("Abstract Art") Matisse or Picasso?

So in your opinion who do you think created Abstract Art? was it Matisse or Picasso? WHO DO YOU THINK IT IS??

Definitely Picasso. He departed from the tradition that paintings should reproduce scenes, as if they were looking at them from window. He iniatated the idea that painter could choose what he painted in a scene/object/figure, and leave out what didn't interest him; and put in what did. He also invented the concept of collage painting - i.e sticking real objects (string, newspaper etc) onto a painting - an idea that would eventual lead to installation art. Matisse paintings focusse on color. He was not an innovator.
