Sanding paint off of a picnic table?

I'm going to be refinishing a wooden picnic table with a water proof finish. First I have to remove the original paint. When sanding, what type of sander should I use, and what type of mask should I wear?

How thick is the paint? If real thick use a belt sander with 100 grit sandpaper.Then when paint is removed move to 150 grit sandpaper working to a higher number means finer grit.Here is a handy tip.If you use a belt sander very much,as you know the paint warms up and gets stuck in the sandpaper.There is a handy little tool for cleaning the old paint out of the sandpaper.Not sure of the name but it is like a very large pencil eraser.You simply touch the eraser to the sandpaper with the sanding belt up while placing the motor on a work surface.Turn on trigger and the eraser will remove most if not all old paint,sawdust.
You can use a paper mask. make sure you have a good fit to your face.wear a good pair of safety glasses or goggles.Also wear some type of head gear to help keep dust from getting in your hair.Good Luck Be SAFE.D

i have a mask that has plastic beads that i want to paint a different color.?

i think the beads are plastic, they are very small, appear to be glued in the wooden mask, but i want to paint them to go with my decor in my home.

I would suggest you try glass paint. This paint would still leave your beads with a translucent appearance. Try it out on a similar bead first, to see if it will work.You can get the paint in any large craft store.It's called Gallery Glass,and is put out by the Plaid company.
