Plastic Adhesive Wall

I am sanding the mortar off the drywall that held plastic tiling on the wall (about 35 years old). ?

This mortor is not concrete mortar but a brownish glue-like mortar. Im not sure what its called but its hard to get off. Do you think this adhesive-mortar material contains asbestos? What can I do to protect myself from it when Im sanding it?

I ve never heard of this type of mastic having asbestos in them since it is a oil based product and very flammable when its moist from using the product.Not now though in its dry stage. You could take some in to have tested as it s the safe thing to do. To get it off you have your choice of cutting the whole dry wall out or use a wall paper scrapper and elbow grease to remove it depending on what your doing. If your retiling it you can go over it safely w/ a cement board and tile atop that. This way your not disturbing the old glue and sealing it in. That you can do .. GL
