Playing with Fire $60 Playing with Fire is written in the collective voice of women employed by a large NGO as activists in their communities and is based on diaries, interviews, and conversations among them. Together their personal stories reveal larger themes and questions of sexism, casteism, and communalism, and a startling picture emerges of how NGOs both nourish and stifle local struggles for solidarity. |

Picture Yourself Playing Violin, 1st Edition $34.99 Welcome to Picture Yourself Playing Violin! This book and accompanying instructional DVD is the easiest way to learn the violin, because it begins at the basics with no prior musical knowledge assumed. This book/DVD package is truly intended for complete beginners—it guides you through your first steps of acquiring a violin, setting up the violin to practice, actually moving the bow and fingering hands, understanding and reading sheet music, and learning how to practice a song up to a point to where you feel comfortable performing it in front of your first audience. As part of the Picture Yourself series, this learning package provides a progression of easy-to-follow instructions with extremely helpful pictures and diagrams that demonstrate every new technique and skill you need to learn, using the same steps and methods the author uses at her music academy. Each of the eight technique-building chapters covers a major aspect of the art of playing violin; for example, how to bow the violin with the right hand, finger the violin with the left hand, read sheet music, and how to learn and perform songs in an easy to follow step-by-step style of instruction. Each lesson builds on the last and adds a new technical aspect to your repertoire. The book also contains sheet music with supportive finger and bowing markings above each note. By the end of the book, you’ll be able to play 13 songs! To help reinforce the concepts in the book, the accompanying DVD includes over an hour of tutorials demonstrating the proper posture, bowing, and fingering techniques explained in the step-by-step teaching method in the book. |

On Playing the Flute $12.49 Johann Joachim Quantz's On Playing the Flute has long been recognized as one of the primary sources of information about eighteenth-century performance practice. In spite of its title, it is not simply a tutor for the flute, but a fully-fledged programme for training musicians of all types, with detailed information on intonation, ornamentation, dynamics, the 'duties' of the various accompanying performers, including the leader of the orchestra, and the principal forms and styles (French, Italian and German) of the time. Although Quantz is most often identified as the teacher of Frederick the Great, his musical roots were in Dresden, the most brilliant musical establishment in Germany; and his travels and studies in Italy, France and England gave him direct experience of most phases of European musical life in the 1720s and 30s. This welcome reissue of the second edition provides a wonderfully complete and detailed picture of musical taste and performance practice in the 18th century, and includes a new introduction by Professor Reilly, drawing attention to recent research on Quantz. |

Playing by the Rules $13.76 Jody`s brother Josh has autism. Jody`s irreverent personality comes through as she narrates this story, giving readers a picture of autism and how she can be relied on to ?translate? for her brother. When Great Aunt Tilda comes for a rare visit, Jody helps her aunt to understand Josh`s behavior and navigate his quirks, likes and dislikes. She helps her brother get used to a new person in the house. Jody also does her best to steal her Aunt`s attention and gets her to play games Jody usually can`t play because her brother doesn`t like them. Whimsical, full-color illustrations make the story lively and bring to light the typical dynamics that can occur between siblings when one has autism and the other doesn`t. PLAYING BY THE RULES is a supportive story for other siblings who take on responsibility for their brother or sister with special needs and don`t get as much attention that they`d like. The story also shows how exchanging pictures (PECS) can be a successful alternative mode of communication for a child with autism. |
