Ethnic Conflict in India

$95

This important new book critically evaluates the conventional reading of ethnicity and ethnic conflict in contemporary Indian politics. By focusing on India's nation and state-building in the peripheral regions since 1947, in particular Punjab, it argues that there is a case for considering India as an ethnic democracy. The long-term development of ethno-nationalist separatist movements and the future character of Indian democracy is assessed in light of the challenge posed by the rise of Hindutva forces, the demise of the Nehruvian state, and the internal political and economic pressures towards regionalization.

Black and Ethnic Leaderships

$37.5

Over the centuries, Britain has received and absorbed large numbers of people from other countries and many Britons went abroad to the colonies as rulers, administrators, soldiers, business people, etc., to represent the Empire. But it is only in the last forty years that Britain has received in significant numbers from the former colonies workers and their dependants whose colour differs from that of the indigenous population. The main sources of this immigration are the New Commonwealth countries (including Pakistan) of the Indian subcontinent and the West Indies. The estimated present-day number of ethnic minorities is about 5 per cent of the total population of 54 million. Of these, almost 50 per cent are now British born. Thus, half of the ethnic minority population is not immigrant but native born British and most of the others now have British nationality.

Making Ethnic Choices

$29.95

"[A] thoroughly original study that greatly expands our knowledge of how ethnic identities are formed. Leonard writes clearly and her inclusion of the voices of the Punjabi-Mexicans lends humor and depth to the history. This insightful study will be of interest to all scholars concerned with immigration and ethnicity and the history of California." âThe Journal of Asian Studies This is a study of the flexibility of ethnic identity. In the early twentieth century, men from India's Punjab province came to California to work on the land. The new immigrants had few chances to marry. There were very few marriageable Indian women, and miscegenation laws and racial prejudice limited their ability to find white Americans. Discovering an unexpected compatibility, Punjabis married women of Mexican descent and these alliances inspired others as the men introduced their bachelor friends to the sisters and friends of their wives. These biethnic families developed an identity as "Hindus" but also as Americans. Karen Leonard has related theories linking state policies and ethnicity to those applied at the level of marriage and family life. Using written sources and numerous interviews, she invokes gender, generation, class, religion, language, and the dramatic political changes of the 1940s in South Asia and the United States to show how individual and group perceptions of ethnic identity have changed among Punjabi Mexican Americans in rural California. "This is an extraordinary work. It is simultaneously an ethnography of early South Asian immigrant life in California, a model of fine-grained historical research using all manner of documents to reconstruct and interpret the migration flows, social structure, and family cycles of Punjabi men and their Mexican spouses, and a sophisticated examination of the complex role of 'identity' in their perceptions of themselves and their descendants.... In the midst of contemporary discussions about multi-culturalism, politically correctly positions, and valuing diversity, this book would be a fine place to begin a thoughtful consideration of the potential multiplicity of meanings ethnicity may have for human begins." âJournal of American Ethnic History "No other book has the scope or the vision of Karen Leonard's work. I expect this book to be consulted as a model of historical research for many years to come." âJames Freeman, San Jose State University

An Indian in White America

$29.95

"At time when most Americans don't realize that over 66 percent of Indians live off the reservation, this book is a powerful witness ... it will reward the reader with an illuminating look into what it means to be a member of America's Native minority." âKirkus Reviews Narrated with intense honesty, this autobiography of Mark Monroe, a Lakota Sioux Indian, is a story of courage, faith, and determination, and a rare opportunity to witness the life of a contemporary American Indian. Despite lifelong confrontations with violence, racism, and personal hardshipâalcoholism, family deaths, illness, poverty, and unemploymentâMark Monroe has worked to instill ethnic pride in his fellow Indians. After an early idyllic childhood at the Rosebud South Dakota reservation, Monroe moved with his parents off-reservation to Alliance, Nebraska. There he first felt the sting of white America's racism from signs outside local businesses that read "No Indians or dogs allowed." As a young man, Monroe enlisted in the military, for the first time experiencing outside acceptance and learning vocational skills. Upon his return to the United States, he worked as a baker. At the same time, however, he was being sucked into a life of alcoholism, begun years earlier with social drinking. Eventually he was unable to eat or to work. After rehabilitation, he ran for Police Magistrate. Monroe was the first Indian ever to have filed for public office in Alliance, and his candidacy divided the town. Though he lost the election, he gained community support and a growing sense of dignity from the campaign. From the misery and hopelessness he suffered as an alcoholic, and the pains of recovery, Monroe became aware of the cultural difference between Indian alcoholism and white alcoholism. This understanding led to his work with Indian alcoholics at the Panhandle Mental Health Center in Scottsbluff, Nebraskaâanother first. No Indian had ever served on the Center's staff. Since his recovery, Monroe has been an active participant in his community and continues to fight for the legal rights of American Indians. In 1973 he founded the American Indian Council, which today offers a variety of health, educational, and social programs, including a nutrition program, a hospital busing program, and alcohol counseling. "[An] interesting representation of Lakota male experiences in the realities of present-day life in the Great Plains." âWicazo Sa Review "Mark Monroe has broken out of society's cage and achieved outstanding things. We are all better off for it. His personality and statureâqualities of leadership, determination, and staminaâquickly override the poverty-stricken times and the tragic aspects that linger constantly at the edges of this Indian world, this seemingly desolate place. Compared with other Native American biographies, An Indian in White America stands near the top." âCharles Ballard, Institute of Ethnic Studies, University of Ne

Tracing an Indian Diaspora

$37.5

The Indian diaspora, comprising over 20 million people spread across a hundred. countries, continues to grow in size and make its presence felt. This collection. traces various forms of plurality within the diaspora: geographical dispersion,. historical contexts, temporal frames, authorial positions and political affiliations. It is an assemblage, not a narrative, and purposefully so. It does not attempt. to produce a new boundary around diasporic identifications, but rather to unsettle. diaspora by loosely juxtaposing a set of chapters that provide complementary,. sometimes conflicting perspectives on diasporic locations, identifications and. representations. Some sections of the compilation probe the migratory movements that have led. to the formation of the Indian diaspora, unpacking its geographical scope and. highlighting its different locales. Others look at diasporic practices, focusing. on the ways and means of remembering and enacting diasporic belonging and the. sites and spaces where such narratives of belonging are performed. This work is an invaluable resource for students, researchers and academicians. working in the fields of anthropology, geography, history, political science,. sociology, Asian studies, diaspora studies, South Asian studies, literary studies,. cultural studies, ethnic and migration studies.
