could a bird cage be turned into a rat cage?

So I saw a giant bird cage at the pet store, that was 24 in wide, by 14 in deep, by 36 in tall. It had a wire bottom, but it was removable, and there was a plastic pan underneath. It had 1/2 in spacing, and it seemed like it could be a good rat cage if you added levels. What's the best way to make levels? and what can you make so they can get from level to level? Thanks!

Our "emergency" rat cage is actually a bird cage with the wire floor & perches removed. As long as the cage is roomy, has bar spacing that won't let your rats squeeze through & has no wire levels, it's fine.

We use hammocks & suspended cardboard boxes to make extra levels in our cages. If you get inexpensive fleece yardage or blankets & cut it to size, you can make a whole extra floor this way. Fleece can be washed but you'll need to replace the cardboard boxes when they've been soiled or chewed up.

Another way to increase the usable space in a cage is to buy 1 or more Lava Ledges, which are marketed for chinchillas & available @ many pet shops. They're not very big, but our rats enjoy them & it's a good way to help them keep their claws from getting too long.

You can also buy wire shelve @ many pet shops, which you can cover with fleece, cardboard or inexpensive vinyl tile.
