The History of Resident Evil Games: Part 3

Understandably, Capcom was just about running out of ideas before Resident Evil 4. There were really six different categories of games that Resident Evil included - with a total of twenty six different titles by 2010. Even after the release of Resident Evil 5, Capcom has announced that they plan to completely revamp the series for Resident Evil 6, a title that we might have to wait 6 years before seeing. We won't delve into all of the little mobile games released in Japan or even the larger releases for multi-player capacities. However, if you have been wondering how they fit into the cycle, a handy reference is provided here:

The market was just swarming with Resident Evil games and Capcom needed a way to get it's slowly shrinking fan base back in Raccoon City. But Raccoon City was no more. What to do, what to do. Luckily, there was an exotic locale yet untouched by the infected spawn of Umbrella. A remote island in the Pacific? No. An underground fortress nestled into picturesque Siberia? Nope. Possum City? Sadly, wrong too. Who would have thought that the location that would revitalize this dying series would be Spain?

Quick! Name Another Game That Takes Place in Spain!

Yeah, we couldn't either. But when Resident Evil 4 hit the market in 2005, fans were shocked. Capcom took all of the complaints that turned off gamers for the heyday of Resident Evil (never having enough ammo, not enough monsters, rough camera) and fixed it all. Resident Evil 4 was just fun to play. Leon Kennedy made his reappearance to save the jail bait President's daughter and the infected got a nice upgrade. No longer were you facing the bumbling squad of mindless zombies from the previous games. Now you had fast infected - and a ton of them. The first attack in the small village at the beginning of the game set the tone for the rest of the experience.

Resident Evil 4 is often called one of the most influential games in the decade that it was released and it received almost universal A+ ratings from critics. Not only did it decide what survival horror would look like after 2005, it showed third person shooters who was the boss. Two awesome games, Gears of War and Batman: Arkham Asylum owe their ratings to Resident Evil 4 as, even from the designer's own mouths, their inspiration was drawn from Resident Evil 4. Survival horror franchises had no choice but to follow with their own revamps - some good and some bad. The long time champion of the old school method of surviving, Silent Hill, even caved in to the fast paced action and focus on combat with the mediocre release of Silent Hill Homecoming in 2008.

Resident Evil 4 actually was a make or break release for Capcom, who stated that this would be the last Resident Evil game they ever made if it failed to post adequate sales. As such, it was a struggle to make. Resident Evil 4 as we know it today was the 5th shot at the game by the developers who scrapped or renamed previous attempts. For example, one of the first tries at Resident Evil 4 was thought to be way too much of a departure from the original series. Rather than continuing, the designers reworked it a bit and remade the main character as a young man named Dante. The Devil May Cry series was born.

Well, we don't really need to say anything about Resident Evil 5, do we? After the media circus following the release of the Resident Evil 5 trailer, Capcom was set and everyone wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Now, we're lucky if every trailer doesn't include some form of controversy just to raise hype. The Resident Evil 5 game we received was not the ethnocentric version promised in the trailer, but the powers that be act more like children than teenagers sometimes and felt that a game set in small villages in Africa was just too controversial with... Africans...

While we may never see a Resident Evil 6, this history has hopefully shown you that you have a lot of work to do before you can donate that old PlayStation to the resale store. Next time you have a few hours to kill, take a trip to Raccoon City. If you do, you'll be prepared for the next T-Virus, rage infected monkey outbreak or good old fashioned mall survival outing.
