My neighbour makes a dreadful noise?

My neighbour makes a trerible noise now he has a cast iron solid fuel fire/stove. We can hear him when he opens the door and starts raking the embers out.The noise is very loud and often wakes us from a deep sleep first thing in the morning and at night. It sounds like he actually is scraping the inside of it with a shovel similar to buiding work noise,it seems to amplify through the chimney breast.It is driving us mad as they tend to this fire about every hour and the noise goes on for at least five minutes at a time. Does anybody know , if this sort of heating is fitted into a chimney breast on a party wall if there should have been noise dampers installed so we could not be disturbed by the racket caused when he rakes the damn thing out.To make things worse it must be sitting on a 1960@s tiled grate so if anything is dropped onto it it is a loud hollow sound we are so fed up it is making me want to leave my home HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The poor man may not be aware. As far as he knows, he's got himself a cast-iron stove: an exciting nod to the past and an interesting talking point. It's all new and exciting for him and he likes using it and looking after it. He may be completely unaware that the sound from it carries as far and loudly as it does. If you go and talk to him about it calmly, he may be very embarrassed and apologetic. If you leave it until you get more and more worked up about it, then chances are that when you eventually bring it up with him, you'll be tense and angry, and that won't be good for either of you. You do need to live next-door to this man, after all, and it's good to be on pleasant terms with neighbours.

Essentially, what I'm saying is, if you don't tell him that what he's doing is causing you problems, it isn't fair to get angry at him for not knowing. If you tell him and he acts like a jerk, well that's another matter.
