When it comes to custom made candles, is variety really the spice of life?

I just got my website up and running - it's not perfect, but I'm still working on it. (www.candlejules.com) I love making candles and have been experimenting with them for about 7 years. In that time, I've made tons of different styles. Also, I'm way into different scent oils. So my question is this; should I just stick to a few kinds of candles with just a handful of scents to keep ordering simple? Or do people really want to have tons of choices? I don't want my customers to be overwhelmed, but I do want to stress that when it comes to custom made candles, you have options! Any feedback and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You could offer all the choices but put them into categories to make it less overwhelming. You could also offer collections of related scents.

If by "custom" you are planning to let people tell you what to make, I can tell you from experience that very few of them would actually do that. In my sewing business I offer custom colors and fabrics, but they really just want a selection to choose from. Occasionally I will get a request for something that's not on the list, to match what they already have, but no more than once every couple of years.

Candles is a tough business because you are competing against dollar stores. Some of their candles are pretty, smell good and they're cheap. You have to constantly stay ahead of the trends and offer something they can't find at Christmas Tree Shop or Big Lots. On the other hand, you have the freedom to invent the next great fad!
